Costumes, obedience and impressive appetites will be put to the test when 1st Moree Scouts bring their free pet show back to Jellicoe Park on Sunday, August 2, 2026.
The event will run alongside the monthly Moree Markets, with registrations opening at 8.30am. The first two categories will begin at 9.15am, followed by the remaining events from 9.45am.
The show is open to any pet, although organisers expect dogs will make up most of the field.
Entrants will compete in four categories: best dressed pet, pet that looks most like its owner, most obedient pet and The Gobble Award, a race to find the fastest eater of dog food.
Each category offers a different test, from costumes and careful commands to family resemblance and sheer enthusiasm at the food bowl. Prizes will be awarded across all four events.
Cub Scout Leader Lila Fisher said pets were already a familiar part of the monthly market scene.
“The Moree Markets already has many dogs who bring their humans down to the park each month,” Ms Fisher joked.
“The dogs love catching up with friends, greeting new dogs to town and getting out and about in the beautiful setting of Jellicoe Park.”
That regular parade of four-legged visitors made the markets a natural setting for the show, giving owners a chance to take part in an activity built around the pets they already bring along.
Behind the playful categories is a practical project for the Scouts.
The group is running the event as part of its Community Service Badge, with members learning about dog ownership rules and responsible pet ownership while helping organise and deliver a public activity.
The show gives Scouts the chance to take what they have learned and apply it in a community setting. It also places them at the centre of the morning’s organisation, from welcoming entries and helping with the program to making sure the event runs safely and smoothly.
For pet owners, the morning is designed to be light-hearted, but the responsible ownership message remains part of the event.
Council rules will apply throughout the show. Dogs must be on a lead or under the direct control of their owner while at the park.
The regular Moree Markets run from 8am to noon at Jellicoe Park on the first Sunday of each month. Visitors can browse stalls offering local produce, handmade goods, plants, books, clothing, food and drinks while the pet show takes place nearby.
1st Moree Scouts coordinate the markets on behalf of Moree Plains Shire Council.
Entry to the pet show is free.
