You do not need to be a golfer to take part in Mungindi’s Pink Golf Day.
Organiser Garry “Red” Trindall said complete beginners were just as welcome as seasoned players when the annual fundraiser returns to Mungindi Golf Club on Sunday, July 19.
“Anybody can turn up,” Red said.
“Anybody that hasn’t even swung a golf club in their life can turn up.”
Hosted by Red and his partner, Kel Chapman, the three-person Ambrose has become an annual fundraiser for the McGrath Foundation, raising just under $15,000 over the years while attracting golfers and spectators from around the district.
The event did not begin on the golf course.
It started as a Pink Stumps cricket day after the local bowling green closed before evolving into the golf fundraiser it is today. A nod to those cricket beginnings remains, with one hole featuring a novelty challenge where players swap their golf club for a cricket bat.
This year’s event will once again combine golf with plenty of fun.
Morning tea and lunch are included, with long-drive competitions, prizes for the winners and runners-up, and a “Bradmans” prize for the team finishing last.
Players are also encouraged to embrace the theme by wearing pink. Anyone who arrives without something pink will be asked to make an additional $10 donation to the McGrath Foundation.
The day is about more than competition.
Red and Kel organise much of the catering themselves, creating a relaxed atmosphere where regular golfers, first-time players and spectators can enjoy a social day while supporting the fundraiser.
The three-person Ambrose format keeps the day relaxed and social. Players can arrive at the club around 9.45am ahead of the 10am tee-off, and those without a full team do not need to worry, with organisers happy to match individual players with others on the day.
Entry is $30 per person, with Red saying $20 from every nomination goes directly to the McGrath Foundation. The golf club also donates proceeds from the day’s golf nominations back to the fundraiser, and card facilities will be available.
The event has previously attracted as many as 78 players and more than 40 spectators. Organisers are hoping between 50 and 70 golfers will take part this year.
With the fundraiser approaching the $15,000 mark, Red said the aim was simple: enjoy a day on the course, have a few laughs and continue supporting the McGrath Foundation.
