The Moree Boars side from the club’s golden era. Saturday’s Back to the 1960s day will see the current A Grade team wear replica 1960 grand final jerseys as the club celebrates its rugby league history.
Round 10 against North Tamworth Bears will bring together three grades of rugby league, Ladies Day and Sponsors Day, with the A Grade clash to be played for the Paul Raveneau Cup.
The club is urging supporters to help recreate the atmosphere of old Boars game days, with every parking spot filled, the sidelines packed, blue-and-white gear on show and car horns sounding whenever Moree crosses the line.
The Back to the 1960s theme will also be carried onto the field, with the current A Grade side to wear replica 1960 grand final jerseys honouring players and key club figures from one of the Boars’ most celebrated eras.
Moree’s 1960 grand final win over Armidale remains one of the defining moments in the club’s history after rugby league great Clive Churchill was brought to Moree to coach the side.
Each replica jersey will feature the name of a player, selector, president or key club figure from that era, with the club inviting former players and family members to present the jerseys to the current A Grade squad before kick-off.
The Boars are still hoping to hear from former players or family members connected to Eric Gilligan, Reg Mitchell, Clive Churchill, Rodney O’Mullane, Keith Jarvis and Noel Tolhurst to help present the replica jerseys.
Ladies Day will also run as part of the program at Boughton Oval and the Moree Boars Clubhouse, with a Denim and Diamonds theme celebrating women involved in the club and broader community.
The day will begin with Ladies Tackle at 12.15pm, followed by Reserve Grade at 1.15pm and A Grade at 2.45pm.
The A Grade match will be played for the Paul Raveneau Cup, named in honour of one of the club’s major figures. Raveneau was the Boars’ 27th life member and played more than 350 games for the club, including 221 in first grade.
The heritage day follows recent efforts to preserve and celebrate Boars history, including recognition of former players and the families connected to the club across generations.
For the Boars, Saturday will combine three grades of football with a visible tribute to the players, families and club figures who helped shape the blue and white.
