A trial game of T20 cricket under lights in Moree last Friday was a huge success, with plans for another night game before Christmas.
The 20-over night game, made up of players from each team in the club’s regular Saturday afternoon competition, got under way at 6pm, with rules to suit the short, sharp game, including a free hit after a no-ball and restricted field placement at different stages of each innings.
Moree District Cricket Association president Grady Sinclair said the trial match – the first under lights in Moree for some years – was a win-win for the club.
“It was a huge success,” Sinclair said.
“We had 22 keen local players and a decent crowd turn out to watch a good game of cricket.
“The game was supposed to be a friendly but, as expected, it was more competitive than our usual Saturday afternoon games,” he laughed.
Team 2 batted first and closed the books at 7 for 144.
“We chased well with 1.2 overs in hand, and won by six wickets,” Sinclair said.
Tom Watts, home from university and a late team addition, was named Man of the Match.
“Tom had a big game, scoring a solid knock of 54,” Sinclair said.
“All the players had a real crack, and there were a lot of laughs throughout the evening. It was a great night.
“Everyone enjoyed being out of the sun and I think the concept has real potential to become a regular thing in Moree,” he said.
Plans are already in place to stage another game under lights on Friday, December 13 to wind down the season ahead of a 2025 restart.
“Last Friday was a great night and everyone’s keen to go again,” Sinclair said.
“We’re planning another T20 match on Friday, December 13, which will be the one-year anniversary of the passing of our former club president, Chris Rowden. We plan to do something extra-special on the night for his family.
“We understand they may not be in a position to come down to the game, but we want to do something special as a mark of respect for Rowdo. He was a great club man, and did a lot for local and regional cricket,” Sinclair said.
Moree District Cricket Association’s regular competition resumes tomorrow afternoon at Ron Harborne Oval, weather permitting.
Moree Thunder and Moree Golf Club play on turf and Pally Pub Bulls play Mehi Mudcrabs on Synthetic 1.
“The games commence at 1pm and spectators are encouraged to come down for the afternoon and support their teams,” Sinclair said.
