A man will face court today, charged with arson and other offences following a house fire in Moree on Monday.
At about 6.50am yesterday, emergency services were called to a home on Sullivan Place, Moree, following reports of a house fire.
Officers attached to New England Police District arrived and found the residence fully engulfed by flames.
Fire and Rescue NSW extinguished the fire at the residence, which was vacant at the time.
However, the home was destroyed. No injuries were reported.
At about 9.45am the same day, following extensive inquiries, police located a man – believed to be aged 32 – on Auburn Street, Moree.
Officers attempted to speak to the man who allegedly refused to comply, before spitting at the officers.
The man was arrested and taken to Moree Police Station where he was charged with damage property by fire/explosives, assault police officer in execution of duty without actual bodily harm, and hinder or resist police officer in the execution of duty.
He was refused bail to face Bail Division Court 5 today, Tuesday, December 23.
Meanwhile, several police investigations are underway and multiple firearms have been seized following a rural crime operation held in the state’s north-west at the weekend.
From Friday, December 19 to Sunday, December 21, NSW Police Force’s Rural Crime Prevention Team led a joint operation, assisted by Central North Police District and the Traffic and Highway Patrol Command, to disrupt criminal activity with a focus on illegal hunting, trespassing, and firearms offences in Nyngan, Walgett and surrounding areas.
Detective Chief Inspector Cameron Whiteside, State Rural Crime Coordinator, said a boots-on-the-ground approach reinforces the NSW Police Force’s commitment to tackling rural crime.
“The RCPT’s work, in conjunction with Central North Police District, continues to disrupt illegal hunting and trespass activity, while bolstering community confidence,” Det Ch Insp Whiteside said.
“This is about maximising outcomes for our rural communities through a coordinated enforcement response, to ensure they can go about their lives safely.
“If you’re engaging in illegal hunting or trespassing activities, rest assured our teams are out and about, with a zero tolerance approach to those doing the wrong thing.”
