INVERELL Shire Council has considered a report regarding the proposed Inverell Battery Energy Storage System, a renewable energy project put forward by South Energy.
The BESS, slated to be located about five kilometres east of the Inverell CBD, has caused concern among residents.
Inverell mayor, Kate Dight, said council recognises renewable energy projects will play a role in the energy future, but also acknowledges the significant impacts they may have on the local community.
“Council is committed to ensuring the voices of our community, especially those directly affected, are heard throughout the assessment process,” Cr Dight said.
“We will continue to advocate strongly for local issues to be considered and will keep the community informed at every stage.”
Subject to approvals and feedback, construction of the proposed Inverell BESS is anticipated to begin in early 2027 and be fully operational by late 2027.
The project, still at an early stage, proposes the construction of a 150-megawatt (MW) large-scale, rechargeable battery system with an energy storage capacity of between four and eight hours.
The system is intended to provide back-up supply and help stabilise the National Energy Market by storing and releasing electricity as required.
If approved, proponents indicate the development could generate around 250 full-time equivalent jobs during the 12-15 month construction period and create three permanent operational positions.
Inverell Shire Council has resolved to continue to participate in all consultation opportunities relating to renewable energy projects in the Shire to ensure local issues are adequately addressed.
Once South Energy submits its Scoping Report to the NSW Department of Planning, Housing and Infrastructure, Council will receive a further report outlining matters to be included in the Environmental Impact Statement, as well as any additional considerations Council may raise with the Department.
Importantly, Council also resolved to note the many concerns expressed by adjoining landholders and other stakeholders in relation to the project, and has committed to providing updated information to the community via social media and other communication channels as the scoping study and planning process progresses.
