A man has died in a two-vehicle crash on the Gwydir Highway between Inverell and Glen Innes on Saturday.
At about 12.30pm, emergency services were called to the Gwydir Highway, near Swan Vale, east of Inverell, following reports of a crash.
The Gwydir Highway was closed in both directions while police commenced an investigation into the circumstances of the crash.
As investigations continue, anyone who witnessed the crash or has dash-cam footage, is asked to call Inverell Police or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
Officers attached to New England Police District attended the scene and found a Ford Ranger utility collided head-on with a B-double combination semi-trailer.
The driver of the utility – a man aged in his 20s – was trapped in the vehicle until being removed by emergency services personnel but could not be revived and died at the scene.
A 22-year-old female passenger in the utility was treated at the scene by NSW Ambulance Paramedics before being airlifted to Gold Coast hospital with spinal and internal injuries.
The driver of the semi-trailer – a 57-year-old man – was not injured and was taken to Inverell hospital for mandatory testing.
A report will be prepared for the coroner.
Just after 6am on Friday, August 8, police, ambulance and emergency services responded to two motor vehicle accidents on the Newell Highway south of Boggabilla.
In the initial accident, a male passenger was trapped inside a rolled ute. He was successfully extricated and received medical treatment for a lower leg injury.
As rescue operations were underway, NSW Police from Boggabilla attended a second collision south of the initial crash site, where a northbound vehicle had rear-ended a stationary car, causing the vehicle to overturn. Both drivers escaped with minor injuries.
