INVERELL Shire residents are invited to drop-in sessions hosted by South Energy and consultant representatives from NGH Consulting to learn about a Battery Energy Storage System proposed for a site 5.5km east of Inverell.
Residents wanting more information can visit the Inverell Cub at 1-3 Evans Street between 3pm and 8pm on Wednesday, July 30.
A second information session will be held the following day, July 31, between 7am and midday at Freckles Café on Byron Street.
Inverell residents are encouraged to attend the information sessions.
The Inverell BESS project will take up 10 hectares, with a proposed capacity of about 150 megawatts and 600 to 1200 megawatt-hours of energy storage.
Subject to approvals, construction of the proposed Inverell BESS is anticipated to begin in early 2027 and full operations expected by late 2027.
South Energy says this is sufficient energy to power about 52,500 households during a four- to eight-hour discharge cycle.
The project is currently in the early development phase.

According to South Energy, Inverell BESS Project will assist in renewable energy integration.
This includes solar and wind, with integration storing excess energy generated during peak production times and releasing it during periods of high demand.
South Energy said Inverell BESS will be built using modern and proven lithium battery storage technology and connected to the energy network through converter skids and power transformers.
South Energy’s website says the project is considered a State Significant Development and must follow a rigid SSD application pathway with the NSW Department of Planning Housing and Infrastructure.
“We are currently in the Scoping Phase of the proposed Inverell BESS Project,” the site says.
“The second step out of nine of an SSD, which helps to identify the assessments that will be included within the next stage of the Project.
“This also means we have another 12-15 months of assessments and engagement to undertake before a final decision of approval or rejection is made by the NSW DPHI or the NSW Independent Planning Commission.”
