NSW Premier Chris Minns and Minister for Youth Justice Jihad Dib are in Moree today to throw more money at a problem that is getting bigger.
The visit, to announce more than $2 million in additional funding over four years, comes as local police appeal for information about two break-and-enters overnight in Moree – one involving an 80-year-old female victim.
At about 1.50am this morning, officers attached to New England Police Area Command were called to a home in Cummins Avenue, Moree, following a report of an alleged break-in.
An 80-year-old woman told police she awoke to find three people – wearing face coverings – who demanded her purse.
The men left with her car keys and drove away in a Kia Cerato. They also damaged her front door.
A short time later, police were called to a motel on Mungindi Road, Moree, where two people kicked in a door while a couple were sleeping.
The occupant of the room confronted the men, but they took keys to a Toyota Landcruiser, before they drove away in the vehicle.
No-one was injured during the break-ins.
A short time later, police saw both vehicles in Moree, and when the drivers failed to stop as directed, pursuits were initiated.
Police terminated the pursuits and spikes were deployed, however the driver of the Toyota swerved towards police cars, causing officers to take evasive action.
About 4am, police found the Kia on fire in Anne Street, Moree, while the Toyota, which was not damaged, was located in Birawee Place, Moree.
Police are appealing with any with information, witnesses or dashcam footage to contact Moree Police Station or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
